How We Measure Whether Ecosystem Restoration Is Actually Working
Restoration monitoring works best as a system with distinct layers, from an initial baseline through to the field evidence that should actually change decisions, rather than a single after-the-fact report.

Four layers of restoration monitoring
- Establish a baseline
Before intervention, document site condition, degradation pressures, existing vegetation or habitat, hydrology and relevant social conditions. A baseline provides the reference point against which recovery can be assessed and helps define realistic restoration objectives.
- Track survival and natural regeneration
For planted sites, survival should be measured after establishment and at later intervals. Natural regeneration is equally important because it can indicate that ecological conditions are improving. Where mortality is concentrated in particular areas, field teams can investigate the underlying cause rather than simply replacing seedlings.
- Monitor habitat and threats
Ecological recovery includes more than individual plants. Teams can track canopy or meadow cover, species composition, sediment condition, erosion, hydrological connectivity and visible disturbance. Recording threats makes the monitoring system useful for management decisions rather than just reporting.
- Connect field evidence to decisions
The purpose of monitoring is action. Results should inform where to protect, where to replant, where to repair hydrology, where to increase community engagement and where to change the restoration method. For blue carbon programmes, the same evidence base should feed into transparent MRV and reporting so that climate claims remain connected to what is happening on the ground.
