Overview

Planting numbers are an activity metric. They say nothing about whether a restoration site is actually recovering. Monitoring is what turns restoration from an activity into evidence.

What Ecosystem Restoration Monitoring Actually Involves

Credible restoration requires evidence of what changed, where it changed, for whom, and over what period. Monitoring work spans mapping, baseline assessment, geospatial records, field surveys, survival tracking and ecological indicators.

The Evidence Taxonomy:

A count of seedlings planted or hectares covered describes an activity. Survival rates, natural regeneration and ecological indicators over time describe an outcome.

Twende’s monitoring work is built to distinguish the two, rather than treating activity numbers as evidence of impact on their own.

should carry a date, geography, programme name and source, and should be clearly labelled as Target, Planned, In Progress, Achieved, or Independently Verified.

The word “verified” is never used without an appropriate independent process behind it, a distinction that matters most in blue carbon work, where Twende does not promise carbon credits simply because restoration occurs.
