Carbon claims require evidence. A blue carbon project that promises credits simply because restoration occurred, without the underlying rigour to back that claim, is not a credible one.

Credibility in blue carbon work rests on more than good intentions. It has to be demonstrated against a consistent set of tests, from ecological integrity through to the safeguards that protect the people living in the landscape.

Four tests for blue carbon credibility
- Ecological integrity
The project should begin with a genuine ecosystem problem and a scientifically defensible restoration or protection pathway. Site selection, species choice, hydrology and restoration methods should be appropriate to local conditions. A carbon claim built on weak ecological assumptions is weak from the start.
- Additionality and a credible baseline
Partners need to understand what would happen without the project and which changes can reasonably be attributed to project activities. The baseline should be evidence-based and periodically reviewed as conditions change. Simply relabelling existing conservation activity does not create additional climate impact.
- Measurement, reporting and verification
MRV should connect field observations to carbon claims. That means defined indicators, consistent sampling, documented methods, quality control and transparent reporting. Ecological indicators such as survival, regeneration and habitat condition can complement carbon measurements and provide an important reality check.
- Community safeguards and durable outcomes
People who live and work in the landscape must have clear rights, roles and benefit pathways. Agreements should be understandable, grievance mechanisms should be available and benefit-sharing should be transparent. Permanence also matters: credible projects plan for disturbance, climate risks and long-term stewardship rather than assuming restoration ends when credits are issued.
