Restoration and enterprise are often discussed as separate goals, one environmental and one economic. On Kenya’s coast, the more useful way to see them is as stages of the same pathway: each restoration outcome creates a specific opening for enterprise that would not exist without it.

A mangrove nursery built to supply one restoration site can grow into a seedling supply business serving others nearby.
- Restored Creeks to Tourism
Restored mangrove creeks that recover their ecological value can support community-led nature tourism, in the same way Kilifi County’s Mida Creek already supports mangrove walks and eco-tour guiding alongside beekeeping.
- Catchment Health to Agriculture
Highland and catchment forest restoration that stabilises water systems supports the climate-smart agriculture that depends on that water downstream.
- Aligned Incentives
Building enterprise around a restoration outcome, rather than an unrelated income activity nearby, keeps the incentive to protect the ecosystem aligned with the incentive to earn from it.
