Every quarter, Twende Green Planet runs its flagship restoration series on Kenya’s coast: the Blue Carbon Quarterly Activation. Each edition puts 5,000 mangrove seedlings into the ground, planted by the same coastal communities who will go on to steward them for years afterward. It is the most visible, most repeatable piece of Twende Green Planet’s work, and it is where the organisation’s whole approach to blue carbon restoration is easiest to see in one place.
What the Blue Carbon Quarterly Activation Is
The Activation is a single-day, high-intensity planting event, but it is the product of months of groundwork. Before any seedling goes into the ground, a site is assessed for tidal conditions, salinity and degradation cause. Seedlings themselves come from Twende Green Planet’s own community-run nurseries, part of the Mangrove Nursery & Seedling Care programme, where they are grown to readiness against clear survival criteria rather than rushed to site on a fixed schedule.
On the day itself, the work is done by the community, not for it. Local groups and Community Forest Associations lead the planting, with Twende Green Planet’s team coordinating logistics, tools and technical guidance rather than doing the planting itself. That distinction matters: restoration that a community does not own rarely survives past the first dry season.
Why Mangroves and Seagrass, Together
Mangroves and seagrass meadows are treated as one connected coastal system in Twende Green Planet’s work, not as separate efforts. Mangroves anchor the shoreline, buffer storm surge and sequester carbon at rates many times higher than tropical forests. Seagrass meadows, just offshore, store carbon in their root systems for centuries and act as nursery habitat for the fish stocks coastal communities depend on. Restoring one without the other leaves half the coastal carbon and livelihood picture untouched.
The Model Behind the Method
None of this is invented from first principles. The Blue Carbon Quarterly Activation follows the same community-ownership model that made Gazi Bay’s Mikoko Pamoja the world’s first verified community-led blue carbon project. Twende Green Planet did not set out to build a new methodology; it set out to apply a proven one, at a larger and more frequent scale, across more of Kenya’s coast.
That means tracking survival, not just planting numbers. Every Activation is followed by monitoring visits that record what actually grows, not just what gets planted, the same discipline that makes Mikoko Pamoja’s own carbon credits independently verifiable.
