Blue Carbon for Climate, Coastal Resilience and Sustainable Development

Blue carbon refers to carbon captured and stored in coastal and marine ecosystems, particularly mangroves, seagrass meadows and tidal wetlands. These ecosystems also provide biodiversity, fisheries, shoreline protection, livelihoods and other services that matter to resilient coastal economies.

Twende approaches blue carbon as an ecosystem and development opportunity, not simply a carbon-credit activity. We work across restoration, science, community governance, monitoring, project development and finance so that blue-carbon initiatives can be environmentally credible, socially grounded and practically implementable.

High-Integrity Blue Carbon

Carbon claims require evidence. We prioritise appropriate baselines, site records, geospatial information, ecological monitoring, transparent assumptions, safeguards and recognised methodologies where relevant, and we do not promise carbon credits simply because restoration occurs.

Every restoration site is planned and stewarded with the communities who live there, from Community Forest Associations to local nursery and monitoring teams.

Site assessment, monitoring, reporting and verification, and carbon-market readiness, so that a restoration site can become a credible, investment-ready blue-carbon project.

Our Vision

A Restored, Resilient African Coastline

 We envision a coastline where mangrove ecosystems are protected as climate infrastructure and carbon markets operate with high integrity and equity, and where the communities that steward them share directly in the value they create. Kenya’s own coast set the stage for this vision in June 2026, when Mombasa hosted the first Our Ocean Conference ever held on African soil, where roughly a third of new commitments targeted Africa’s blue carbon and nature-based solutions, in the same direction as the IUCN-led Great Blue Wall initiative restoring mangroves across the Western Indian Ocean on Mikoko Pamoja’s own community-benefit model.

Scaling What Already Works

Our mission is to scale community-led blue carbon and climate resilience solutions across Africa’s coastline, and to build the partnership and funding infrastructure that makes that scale possible. This work is grounded in UN Sustainable Development Goals 13, 14 and 15, and in the African Union’s Agenda 2063, whose Goal 7 commits the continent to environmentally sustainable, climate-resilient economies and a sustainable blue economy.

Blue Carbon FAQs

What is blue carbon?

Blue carbon refers to the carbon captured and stored by coastal and marine ecosystems, mainly mangroves, seagrass meadows and tidal wetlands. These ecosystems sequester carbon at rates many times higher than tropical forests, while also protecting coastlines and sustaining local fisheries and livelihoods.

Why are mangroves important?

Mangroves store large amounts of carbon in both biomass and waterlogged, oxygen-poor sediment, which lets that carbon remain buried for very long periods. They also protect coastlines from erosion and storm damage, provide nursery habitat for fish, and support the livelihoods of coastal communities.

Why restore seagrass?

Seagrass meadows are a significant but often overlooked blue carbon ecosystem, facing decline from anchoring, trawling, sediment disturbance and reduced water quality. Restoring and protecting seagrass supports carbon storage, fisheries productivity and coastal water quality.

Does every restoration project generate carbon credits?

No. Carbon credits require documented baselines, additionality, permanence and a recognised methodology, verified through a formal process. Restoration is the starting point; whether a specific project becomes a carbon-credit project depends on whether it meets those requirements.

What is blue-carbon MRV?

MRV stands for Monitoring, Reporting and Verification, the practice of measuring and documenting ecological and carbon outcomes over time, using site records, ecological monitoring and geospatial data, so that restoration claims are evidenced rather than assumed.
