Overview

A mangrove restored at the coast can still fail if the catchment feeding it is degraded further upstream. Highland and catchment forest restoration is how Twende connects the two.

Highland & Catchment Forest Restoration

Forest condition, water systems, livelihoods and downstream coastal ecosystems are connected, not separate problems. Degraded highland and catchment forest changes water flow, sediment load and water quality all the way down to the coast.

How the Programme Works:

Kenya Forest Service’s Adopt-a-Forest programme partners organisations with local Community Forest Associations to restore degraded forest land at scale.

Twende’s Highland & Catchment Forest Restoration programme is built on this same model, working directly with local Community Forest Associations at each restoration site.

Community nurseries, restoration planting or assisted natural regeneration, aftercare, monitoring and institutional partnerships all form part of this programme.

A formal partnership or memorandum of understanding with Kenya Forest Service itself is a direction Twende is building toward, not yet formalised.
