Four priorities for healthy seagrass landscapes
- Protect existing meadows first
The cheapest and most reliable seagrass restoration strategy is often preventing avoidable damage to healthy habitat. Mapping sensitive areas, reducing physical disturbance and improving local awareness can protect carbon stocks and biodiversity before expensive intervention is required.
- Restore only where conditions support recovery
Where degradation has occurred, restoration should be based on site suitability. Teams need to consider depth, sediment, water clarity, currents and the pressures causing decline. Transplanting without addressing those conditions can create short-lived projects rather than functioning meadows.
- Connect seagrass to fisheries and livelihoods
Seagrass is not an isolated conservation asset. Healthy meadows support coastal food systems and fisheries by providing habitat and nursery functions. Restoration planning is stronger when local communities can see how ecosystem condition relates to catches, shoreline health and household livelihoods.
- Monitor ecological change over time
Credible programmes establish a baseline and return to the site to measure change. Coverage, density, species composition, sediment condition and disturbance indicators can reveal whether a meadow is recovering. For blue carbon work, ecological monitoring should sit alongside transparent carbon accounting and clear evidence of permanence and additionality.
