Four rules for locally designed restoration
- Understand the Physical System First
Understand the physical system first. Assess water movement, elevation, soil or sediment conditions, salinity where relevant, climate exposure and the processes that originally supported the ecosystem.
- Let Evidence Choose the Species
Select species and interventions based on local ecological evidence. Prioritise appropriate native or locally occurring species and use natural regeneration wherever conditions allow it.
- Integrate Local Knowledge
Integrate local knowledge into design. Communities often hold detailed knowledge of seasonal conditions, historical ecosystem change, fishing or farming patterns, access routes and areas under pressure.
- Test, Monitor and Adapt
Test, monitor and adapt. Restoration is an ecological experiment with real-world consequences. Monitoring provides the evidence needed to refine methods, redirect effort and improve future restoration decisions.
Designing around local ecology does not make restoration slower; it makes investment more likely to produce durable environmental outcomes.
