Kilifi County
Kilifi County is one of Kenya’s 47 devolved counties, established on 4 March 2013 through the merger of the former Kilifi and Malindi Districts, and the primary coastal county where Twende Green Planet’s mangrove and seagrass restoration work is based.
An Existing Mangrove and Coastal Ecosystem Site Within the County
Mida Creek
- Home to Mida Creek, where existing mangrove boardwalks and eco-tourism guiding already support community enterprise
- Arabuko Sokoke Forest and the Watamu-Gede area, adjoining coastal forest and marine conservation geography
- Kenya’s largest coastal county by area, with tourism and fishing as major economic drivers
- Borders Mombasa County to the south, our other coastal restoration geography
Kilifi County is the geography where Twende Green Planet’s mangrove and seagrass restoration work is based, carried out under Kenya’s national and county-level permitting framework. We describe our work here in the terms it actually has today; a formal relationship with the county government would be named here plainly if one is established.
- Restoration programming carried out under Kenya’s national and county-level regulatory framework
- The primary coastal county (with Mombasa) where our mangrove and seagrass work is based
- Existing nature-based enterprise activity around Mida Creek shows the community-led model already working locally
