Let’s Make THE Difference

Let’s Make THE Difference (LMTD) is a nonprofit based in Nashville, Tennessee, that funds programmes run by refugee and under-resourced communities across Africa. Its mission is to equip and empower Difference Makers to create lasting impact in the world. The people who run the programmes live in the communities they serve and are paid a living wage to lead them, and LMTD connects the people who fund the work to the people who do it.

A Promise That Became a Movement

LMTD was founded by Wendy Huffman, its Chief Difference Maker, who leads it from Nashville. It grew out of a promise she made to her partner Bill Spalthoff, who died in 2019 while mentoring teachers in a rural community in Zambia. Its work began there, in Livingstone. Today it is most active in the Kakuma and Kalobeyei refugee settlements in Kenya, with recent expansion to the Adagom refugee settlement in Nigeria. LMTD holds the Silver Transparency Seal from Candid for 2026, and it reports that between 75 and 90 cents of every dollar goes directly to programmes and communities.

what it does

Two Programmes Led by Refugees

  • The Knead to Feed Bakery: a refugee-owned bakery in the Kakuma settlement in Kenya that creates jobs, teaches entrepreneurship and improves food security
  • The Peace Campaign: a peace and conflict resolution curriculum written and taught by refugees who have lived through conflict
  • Leadership training: the Introduction Leadership Program and the Change Agent Course, delivered with Landmark Worldwide
  • Women’s education and leadership, including work in Zambia
enterprise

The Knead to Feed Bakery

Knead to Feed was founded under the leadership of Honoré Ebengo and became a refugee-led business with LMTD’s support. At full capacity it bakes 12,000 loaves a month, employs up to 12 staff at once at twice the local living wage, and has trained more than 100 people in baking and business. LMTD has helped fund its commercial oven, mixer and solar power system. The bakery was damaged by a monsoon in early 2026, and its team and LMTD are rebuilding it. It supports the Sustainable Development Goals on zero hunger, decent work and reduced inequalities.

peacebuilding

The Peace Campaign

The Peace Campaign is a six-month leadership, peace and conflict resolution course taught in schools, settlements and neighbourhoods. It covers personal peace, mediation between people, conflict resolution in the community, and a commitment to serve as a Global Peace Ambassador. Its curriculum also covers democracy and elections, peace and conflict resolution, and leadership development. In its first round it cut violence in Kakuma and Kalobeyei by an estimated 60 percent, and the camp administration has asked LMTD to run it for every incoming refugee. Graduates carry it home: one trained in Kakuma in 2020 and now teaches peace in his own village in South Sudan. It supports the Sustainable Development Goal on peace, justice and strong institutions.

Why LMTD Is Named Here

Twende Green Planet lists Let’s Make THE Difference among its strategic partners. Its work shows what community-led restoration looks like in practice: local leaders who design the programme, own the business and teach the skills, with funding that reaches them directly. That is the same community-first approach behind Blue Carbon Action 2026.
