Overview

Grant funding for a restoration project eventually ends. The ecosystem it restored still needs protecting. Community enterprise is what can close that gap, by giving restoration a source of ongoing local income.

Community Enterprise as a Long-Term Restoration Strategy

A restoration site that only ever costs a community time and effort is asking for a great deal of goodwill to last indefinitely. A site that also generates income, through nursery sales, beekeeping or nature-based tourism, gives that community a reason to keep protecting it that does not depend on continued outside funding.

Enterprise Built on What Restoration Already Produces:

  • Nursery Surplus

A community mangrove nursery that produces more seedlings than one site needs can supply neighbouring restoration efforts.

  • Downstream Agriculture

Forest catchment restoration that improves water systems supports climate-smart agriculture downstream.

  • Fisheries-Linked Livelihoods

Restored coastal ecosystems that recover fish nurseries support fisheries-linked livelihoods.

  • Cash Crop Trainers Programme

Twende’s Coastal Enterprise & Cash Crop Trainers Programme is built specifically around this connection, training communities in climate-smart, nature-based enterprise alongside the restoration work itself.
